In the 19th century, Sintra became one of the first cradles of Romantic architecture in Europe. Its unique climate and lush natural landscape captivated those who, inspired by its beauty, dared to reshape it with dazzling architecture in Eden-like harmony—an environment that invites contemplation of the Beautiful and the Sublime.
It is within this picturesque setting, just outside Sintra’s historic center, that Quinta da Regaleira emerges. Conceived and built at the end of the 19th century, it reflects the cultural, philosophical, and scientific sensibilities of its owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848–1920), combined with the virtuosity of Italian architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848–1936).
From the shared vision and creativity of these two remarkable figures arose an eclectic revivalist architectural ensemble, with strong influences from Manueline, Renaissance, Medieval, and Classical styles.
