Recap of Session I: Barriers and enablers of intergenerational dialogue

Moderator: Shawn Westcott, The Wellbeing Project

The first session in our Lab Series on “The Role of Elders in Nurturing Civic Values” brought together participants from 12 different countries to reflect on the profound impact that elders have in shaping our lives. Through personal stories, we heard how elders impart lessons in adaptability, patience, and the importance of keeping an open dialogue. Participants shared insights on the value of somatic practices, such as gentleness and deep breathing, and how elders help us accept life’s complexities, including mortality, freedom, and the responsibilities that come with it. This discussion underscored the richness of elder wisdom, offering both practical guidance and deeper philosophical perspectives.

We also examined the barriers that prevent effective intergenerational dialogue, with technology playing a key role in widening the divide. Instant access to information often diminishes the perceived value of elder experience, while generational stereotypes, communication breakdowns, and the social isolation of older individuals further limit meaningful exchanges. Time constraints in modern life and the fast pace of society leave little room for the reflective, patient interactions that are essential to these dialogues.

As a third step, the session identified promising enablers to bridge the generational gap. Participants suggested creating more shared spaces—whether through public forums, community projects, or storytelling initiatives—that bring elders and youth together. Technology, when thoughtfully applied, can also foster connection through hybrid formats, podcasts, and digital platforms. We explored how gamification and mentorship programs could encourage collaboration, with elders contributing life skills and knowledge beyond academic frameworks. The discussion also pointed toward policy changes to ensure that elders remain active contributors in community life post-retirement, helping to revalue their wisdom in today’s rapidly changing world.
