Mapping Civic Education in Europe
14. September 2023 at 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM CEST
| FreeOur first NECE Campus online workshop titled “Mapping Civic Education in Europe,” gathered 31 participants to explore the mapping programme, led by Maja Kurilić and Louisa Slavkova from THE CIVICS Innovation Hub – an ambitious programme that aims to visualise and connect civic educators all across Europe.
The story of this programme begins back in 2021 with THE CIVICS team, collaborating with partners from 22 European countries, and working diligently on an ambitious mission. The result is a substantial database, comprising nearly three thousand individuals and organisations active in non-formal and informal civic education who were invited to share their insights through two detailed online questionnaires.
The first questionnaire provided valuable insights into the diverse landscape of civic education within each of the mapped countries. The second questionnaire delved deeper into the national networks and connections that intertwined these dedicated educators.
The highlight of this endeavour is the creation of an interactive online civic education map — a pioneering initiative in Europe. This map provides a digital platform for civic educators to showcase their work, offering users the ability to explore and categorise organisations based on factors like location, focus areas, approaches, and experience.
Throughout the NECE Campus workshop, participants were presented with the potential of the map as a valuable tool with the capacity to inform and support a wide range of stakeholders, from institutions and civil society organisations to researchers and policymakers. The map offered a fresh perspective on civic education, fostering collaboration and progress in the field.
In breakout groups, attendees engaged in thoughtful discussions, exploring opportunities and challenges in the realm of civic education. They also acknowledged the practical utility of the map, recognising its potential to transform the way civic education is approached and understood.
