Webinar recap
This webinar discussed the innovative use of artificial intelligence and new technologies in teaching and communicating conflictual histories and polarising topics, focusing on the Histories from Belene project, an initiative of the Sofia Platform Foundation. In the first half of the session, we learned about the complexities of Bulgaria’s Communist period, including the polarised views and limited understanding of this part of history among Bulgarians, despite recent curriculum changes.
Attendees engaged in interactive discussions, reflecting on the challenges of teaching and understanding conflictual histories and acknowledging the importance of ethical considerations and historical accuracy in utilising new technologies. Examples of projects utilising artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality were shared, emphasising their potential to engage audiences and enhance historical education.
Finally, the webinar showcased the Histories from Belene project’s virtual conversations with survivors of the Belene camp, employing extensive interviews and AI technology to create immersive digital experiences. Practical considerations such as internet infrastructure and educator engagement were also addressed, highlighting the project’s commitment to preserving survivors’ memories and reaching diverse audiences. Attendees were invited to explore the project’s website and engage with virtual tours and conversations, underscoring the project’s goal of fostering understanding and remembrance of Bulgaria’s conflicted past.
